National Overview: Shift work volume1 increased by 0.5% per week between the weeks ending on July 26 and August 2, but otherwise stayed virtually unchanged, according to Kronos Incorporated’s U.S. Workforce Activity Report for July 27–Aug 2. This is marginally faster than the weekly average shift work growth of 0.3% that has been happening since the week ending June 28. Over the first 11 weeks of the recovery, which started the week ending April 12th, shift work increased by 32%; but, since late June, it has only increased by 1.5%.Snapshot of the Region: The Northeast is the only area to report a notable increase in shift work for the month of July, having regained 62% of the shifts lost during the pandemic, up from 55% in late June. The West3 is currently 11.1% below pre-pandemic levels after increasing by half a percentage point (0.5%). After increasing shift volume by 0.3% the previous week, the Northeast 4 has to regain an additional 15.1% to match the volume of shifts worked the week ending March 15 – the final week of “normal” workplace activity prior to the epidemic. The Midwest 5 fell by 0.1% and needs to rebound by an additional 10.8% to make a complete recovery.
