27 of New York’s biggest employers — including IBM, Chase, Amazon — commit to creating 100,000 jobs by 2030
More than two dozen of the largest employers in the New York City area are committing to create 100,000 jobs over the next decade. The group of 27 employers — which is calling itself the New York Jobs CEO Council — includes massive companies like JPMorgan Chase, IBM, McKinsey & Co., Amazon.com Inc., Google and Goldman Sachs. The group’s focus will be on connecting people in low-income and Black, Latinx and Asian communities to job opportunities. The employers’ pledge to hire 100,000 traditionally underserved New Yorkers by 2030 includes creating job opportunities and apprenticeships for 25,000 City University of New York students. “Many New Yorkers are stuck in low-paying jobs that could be lost in the future or are struggling to navigate the labor market as the Covid-19 crisis has further exacerbated the economic inequities in the city,” said Jamie Dimon, CEO and chairman of JPMorgan Chase, in a statement. “As companies with a long-standing commitment to the New York area and its residents, we are using our collective power to prepare the city’s workforce with the skills of the future and helping New Yorkers who have been left behind get a foot in the door.” Gail Mellow, the former president of LaGuardia Community College in Queens, will be the council’s executive director.
